First, let's discuss what a "living book" is. Living books are a part of the Charlotte Mason method of educating although many others use living books also. (You can read the 20 principals of the Charlotte Mason philosophy here.) She believed that children should be respected, not talked down to and their books shouldn't be dumbed down. Nature walks and journaling play a big part of this method.Living books are of a higher literary quality. The books are engaging and enjoyable. They cause the mind to stir and create ideas. Living Books For the Ears have free downloads of living books. This is a great resource for any method of homeschooling. At the very least, it will provide some quiet time for mom and stimulate the children's minds at the same time!

Our children are now adults and while they were young neither one of us knew Jesus personally. Only Sunday morning pews.
With having said that, do you read for fun, yourself? If so, I highly recomment When Crickets Cry by Charles Martin.
