Is Your Homeschooled Son Struggling with Math? Try These Strategies for Success!

Homeschooling can be a wild ride, especially when it comes to math. If you're a homeschool mom of a boy who's struggling with math, it's okay to take a break and come back to it later.

One of the perks of homeschooling is that you can tailor the curriculum to your child's needs and learning style. If math isn't your son's thing, try using a different approach or resource. There are plenty of online math games and interactive activities that can make learning math more fun.

Remember, math skills take time to develop. It's totally normal to have struggles and setbacks when learning any subject. Encourage your son to keep trying and to ask for help when he needs it. If you're feeling overwhelmed or frustrated, take a break and come back to math when you're both feeling more relaxed.

In the end, if your son is struggling with math, it's okay to take a break and come back to it later. Try different approaches and resources, and encourage your son to keep trying and ask for help when he needs it. By taking a calm and patient approach, you can help your son build a strong foundation in math and boost his confidence.

Do you schedule breaks from homeschooling in advance or take them as needed? Share your experiences and tips for taking breaks during the school year!

Bliss Comes in a Package Marked: Organization

(This is a guest post.  It suggests ideas for kids who go to traditional school but the organizational ideas can easily be adapted for homeschoolers especially if you go on field trips or to co-ops.)

Bliss Comes in a Package Marked: Organization
Back pack? Yes. Lunchbox? Yes. Gym clothes? Oh, no! Not everyone can live up to the euphoria of Real Simple magazine’s stylish organization, but a little tidy organization and routine upkeep within the home can make a mom’s jam-packed schedule run a little smoother. Try these tips and turn an “Oh, no” into, “yes.”
· Store and sort your children’s school items in the same place each night. Make it a destination spot near the front door. Before you leave each morning, you and your children can make a habit of checking that their backpacks are filled with everything needed to ensure a school day is packed and ready to go.
· Have your children pick and lay out their school outfits the night before, in the same place each night. Doing this will minimize the morning battle of “what to wear” versus “what not to wear” as well as prevent you from losing valuable time making three or four trips to the laundry room in the morning in search of missing socks, underwear or gym clothes.
· Organize lunch meals with advance preparation and planning. Preslicing and prepacking snacks like carrots or cheese can minimize lunchbox assembly time in the morning and give you more time to get dressed for work. Doing a little advance meal preparation can also give you more time with your child to talk about the exciting things going on in school that afternoon.

It may not be rocket science, but little steps toward improving organization can go a long way and bring a sense of calm to you and your child.

What are we using for math?

In my search for a great math program that was free or inexpensive, I came across MathTV.comFor $20, I have access to all of the online textbooks, the math problems & solutions, the videos explaining the concepts in each chapter and extra worksheets for a period of six months.

Double Espresso (6th grade) is using the Essentials of Basic Mathematics and Espresso (8th grade) is doing review with Introductory to Mathematics and will be moving up to Introductory to Algebra soon. (I wanted to do review after summer.)

With these textbooks, we are able to skip topics that they have already mastered.  The boys like the video teachers and each have their favorite person.

The boys go to the next chapter and watch all of the videos.  I print out the math problems for that chapter and they get to work.  They are always able to go back and review the video if needed.  After their work is completed, I am able to click the answers link at the top of the chapter and easily check their answers.  (I do not need to print all of the pages of the textbooks.  I only print the math problem pages.)

This is not a paid or sponsored review.  I just wanted to share what works for us!

  • Very affordable
  • Easy to use
  • Great teaching videos
  • Awesome price
  • Super simple and very little work for Mom!
